Description

Silvia Clarke
1911–1993

Silvia Clarke  was born in Cavendish, Suffolk, England and educated at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. During the Second World War she worked for the BBC and MI5 before emigrating to Canada in 1947 with her husband. Settling in London, Ontario, she attended art classes at the H.B. Beal Secondary School and became an active member of the Western Art League and Gallery Painting Group. Clarke painted landscapes, still‑lifes and local street scenes with a delicate, impressionistic touch. She remembered the London art community of the 1950s as ‘one big happy family,’ and her work often reflects the warmth she found there.
