Description

Jean Spence

Jean Spence was born in Chicago, Illinois, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1972 before relocating to London, Ontario, with her archaeologist husband. She studied printmaking at Fanshawe College (1973–1976) and completed a Bachelor of Education at Western University in 1978. Spence’s art combines watercolour, embroidery and found materials to explore personal and historical narratives. A long‑time member of the Forest City Gallery and the Embassy Cultural House, she curated programs addressing social justice and environmental themes. Her series of Lake Erie landscapes and her works inspired by the ancient city of Teotihuacan exemplify her interest in the spiritual connections between land and culture. Her works are in public collections.
