Voices of Care – Language Matters For Inclusion

This year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was particularly special as it marked the 35th anniversary of Across Languages. Since its founding in 1989, the organization has grown to become a leader in professional language services, making a profound impact on countless lives by bridging language barriers and fostering inclusivity.

The meeting featured two remarkable guest speakers, MPP Teresa Armstrong and Deputy Chief of Police Paul Bastien. While the event celebrated the organization’s progress, the focus was also on envisioning the future of Across Languages.

Deputy Chief of Police Paul Bastien: The Vital Role of Interpreters

Deputy Chief of Police Paul Bastien, brought a unique perspective on the role of interpreters in the judicial system, stressing the importance of clear communication in maintaining public trust and safety. He shared anecdotes from his experience as a police officer, illustrating how language barriers, combined with cultural differences, can lead to mistrust in law enforcement system and, at times, escalate tense situations.

Bastien emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police and language services, reinforcing that effective communication can significantly enhance community trust and safety.

MPP Teresa Armstrong: A Commitment to Growth and Modernization

A key highlight of the AGM was the announcement by MPP Teresa Armstrong of a new strategic plan for Across Languages, supported by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The plan focuses on three core areas: growth, modernization and enhancing organizational culture. Armstrong emphasized that this funding will enable the organization to improve its services and expand its reach within the community. She highlighted the importance of adapting to the evolving needs of the community and ensuring that Across Languages remains a leader in providing translation and interpretation services.

Looking ahead, the strategic plan will guide Across languages toward new opportunities. With evolving technology and shifting community needs, the organization must remain adaptable and innovative to stay at the forefront of the language services industry.

Annual Staff Award

TTo celebrate this milestone, a special moment was dedicated to honoring the dedication and hard work of the team. The Annual Staff Award was presented to Sylvia Krecsko, who was nominated by her colleagues for her exceptional commitment, leadership, and passion for the organization’s mission. Sylvia’s contributions over the years have been invaluable, and her recognition at this 35th AGM was fitting tribute to her tireless efforts in supporting the community and advancing the goals of Across Languages.

The AGM was not only a platform for discussing strategic growth and modernization but also a celebration of the individuals and partnerships that drive the organization’s mission forward.
